Father Mbaka

Rev. Fr. Ejike Camillus Anthony, Ebenezer Mbaka was born to the noble family of late Chief Humphrey Ogbuefi and Felicia Mbaka in Amata Ituku in Awgu L.G.A of Enugu State. His father Ogbuefi Mbaka was a renowned and highly skilled palm wine tapper, a profession he was deeply immersed in for his livelihood. Fr Mbaka is the only son of the parents and his birth was a great relief to his parents who presumably because of the experiences they had with child birth christened him “Ejike” (meaning “not by Power” which fuller meaning finds expression in the Biblical Verse that says “Not by Power, not by might but by Your Spirit”) . At infancy, Little Ejike was introduced to his father’s trade and domestic chores much as he was immersed with communing with his God. He used to organize Block Rosary Prayers and was also deeply involved in the charismatic activities in his home parish, St. Anthony’s Parish Ituku where he led the prayer warrior team, a service that endeared him to the entire Christian Community in his hometown.

Vocational Experience

Being the only son of his father who was a pagan at that time, Ejike grew up with the conscious awareness of his father’s wish for him to be the successor and heir of his family as is customary in the Igbo tradition. However the wish of his Old father was greeted with disappointment when Ejike declared his desire to go to Seminary School and become a priest of the Catholic Church. His decision was met with stack opposition by his father and kinsmen. One can pathetically understand his father’s position at the time because as the only son, the news of his priesthood quest was tantamount to perpetually lost and foreclosure of his linage (in Igbo culture) and so Ejike was therefore made to pay dearly for his supposedly act of obstinacy and insubordination. Determined, unruffled, undaunted, and resolute to the divine call to serve his creator, after his secondary school education at St. Vincent’s secondary school Agbogugn in Awgu L.G.A of Eungu state, Ejike proceeded to Seat of Wisdom Seminary Owerri and St Joseph’s Ikot Ekpene for his Seminary formation amidst the uncertainty of any sponsor. Lots of miraculous testimonies about his life and time in the seminary schools and the subsequent apostolic works were too real to be true some of these you may find in our page on the life stories of Fr Mbaka narrated in this site.

Ordained a catholic priest on July 29th 1995, it was a surprise that the Ordination of a man so embattled in his vocational choice as he was would be greeted with some unusual events. His father took ill about the time he was to be Ordained a priest but through the visionary powers he possessed in his seminary school days he did not only see his father’s being taken to a Morgue after having died of the illness but also his timely intervention with the prayer antidote revealed to him in the same vision revive his father and keep him alive to witness his Ordination which was one of Ejike’s greatest wishes. His ensured that his father received Christ and baptism before his demise years after his Ordination. The full detail of his story is contained in our Rev Fr Mbaka’s Life Stories in this site.

Another landmark of his Ordination was the Gospel reading on the day of his Ordination which was taken from, Luke 4:18-19 “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the good news to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord”.  It was significant that this same bible passage was inscribed in his Ordination souvenirs prepared before his ordination without any prior knowledge that that was to be the gospel reading of his ordination day. What a spiritual significance of his mission on earth? His prayer request to God at his Ordination was “God, make me a magnet of souls”

That was not all, hell was let loose as multitudes of bees believed to have emanated from the Dark Kingdoms besieged the venue of his reception in a bid to frustrate, thwart and scatter that all important event but too late, his Ordination has already been concluded before the satanic emissary. It was akin to the Pharaoh’s proclamation to behead the Israelites’ new born in a bid to terminate the life of Jesus when he learnt of his star from the three wise men His Ordination was historic as it marked the triumph of light over darkness to the glory of God.

Missionary Works

The first Post Ordination Mission of Young Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka was Holy Ghost Cathedral, the headquarters of Catholic Church in Enugu Diocese where he was posted to as the Assistant Diocesan Administrator. It was there that the anointing imbued in him began to manifest. He did not only distinguish himself as a seasoned administrator but also gave the church in Enugu diocese the long desired apostolic spice and fillip to forge on. . His penchant for adoring the Eucharist during his Mass Celebrations marked a radical shift from the age long stereotype rhetoric during Mass Celebration in the minds of Worshipers People discovered something very special in this young priest and followed him to wherever he went. God indeed made him a magnet of souls, his office hours at the cathedral expectedly became a beehive of activities as the crowd continually besieged him with one spiritual problem or the other. With this yearning, this young man who feels the pulse of his people started exposing the Blessed Sacrament so as to enable the people pray and receive answers to their requests. He later discovered the need to embark on evangelical missions outside the cathedral with a bid to reaching out to more people. Such moves took him to Capuchin and G.T.C Enugu where he celebrated masses for the congregation.
